Developmental Psychology Terms and Definitions (Psychosocial)

TermDefinition
Psychosocial Development theory (PD) identifies eight stages during which we face an important issue or crisis
PD Stage 1 trust vs. mistrust; (0-1 yr.); infants
Trust vs. Mistrust whether or not the child will leave the stage with a strong trust that others will care for him/her
PD Stage 2 autonomy vs. shame and doubt; (2 years old); toddlers
Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt whether or not children will have the confidence develop autonomy or if they may doubt their abilities and feel ashamed of their actions
Autonomy independence of control
PD Stage 3 Initiative vs. guilt; (3-5 yrs.); children
Initiative vs. guilt develop initiative through play, asking questions, making choices, and using their imaginations; or feel guilty for doing such things
PD Stage 4 Industry vs. inferiority; (6-12 yrs.); school-aged children
Industry vs. Inferiority positively reinforced for productive/recreational activities or feel social/mentally inferior; determines self-concept

PD Stage 5 identity vs. role confusion; (12-20 yrs.); adolescents
Identity vs. Role Confusion building a consistent identity, defining themselves (values, attitudes, beliefs, and perspectives) or are confused/uncertain on who they are and where they are going
PD Stage 6 intimacy vs. isolation; (21-40 yrs.); young adults
Intimacy vs. Isolation deeply caring about others and sharing meaningful experiences with them; or feel alone and uncared for in life
PD Stage 7 generativity vs. stagnation; (40-65 yrs.); middle-aged adults
Generativity vs. Stagnation guiding/mentoring others to enrich the lives of others or becoming preoccupied with their own needs and comforts
PD Stage 8 integrity vs. despair; (65-death); late adulthood
Integrity vs. Despair develop integrity and wholeness with a satisfied life or despair with a life or regret and disappointments
Midlife crisis experience anxiety, instability and change about themselves, their work and their relationships
