Satire Unit Terms

| Satire | The use of humor to expose and ridicule bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. It seeks to change or improve those bad qualities. |

| Symbolism | Use of an image to represent a larger idea or quality |
| Exaggeration/ Hyperbole | Representing something as more extreme than it is in reality |
| Verbal Irony | When one thing is said but the opposite is what is meant. |
| Situational Irony | When you expect one thing but the opposite (or something different) happens |
| Juxtaposition | Placing two things side-by-side to compare and contrast those things and illustrate a point OR placing things side by side for some sort of strategic effect. |
| Parody | Imitation of a recognizable character, genre, etc. for humorous effect. |
| Incongruity | Things being out of place or absurd in relation to their surroundings. |
| Reversal | To present the opposite of what you would expect the situation to be– could be chronological, logical, or hierarchal. |
