Module 6

Module 6 Synergize

Habit 6: Synergize
Module 15: Value Differences Main Point: Valuing differences is about more than race or gender, and enriches your life experiences.
Synergy Is a principle, a natural law Starts with the paradigms in your head. So, in order for it to work one must be open to learn from others, open to group work, and accept differences of others
Independence vs Interdependence Life isn't lived alone, interdependence is better than independence
Interdependence Benefits and Ideas Benefits: do better in college by working with others, Others strengths can make up for your weaknesses, saves time Ideas: You don't always have to have the best ideas, it's not about "my way" it's about the better way to create together
Negative Synergy Individual greatness but poor chemistry= the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Ex. great individual talent but lack of chemistry on the team losing games Hostility 1+1=-1,-5,-10 Defensiveness 1+1=1/2 Compromise 1+1=1 1/2
Positive Synergy Team work, study groups, friendships, classrooms, families Ex.Think about the weight you carry on your own vs the weight you could carry when someone interlocks with you and balances. 1+1=3,10,100 or more
Complementary Each person's talents complements everyone else's talents and makes up for any weaknesses. Diversity is key
Six Gains of Diversity Expands global awareness, enhances social development, prepares students for future career successes, increases your knowledge base, promotes creative thinking, enhances self-awareness
Module 16: Go for the 3rd Alternative Main Point: There is always a new and better solution to any problem, and synergy can get you there.
2nd Alternative Thinkers My team vs. Your team This way of thinking skews our views into a pass or fail way of living
3rd Alternative Thinkers This way of thinking has you looking for another way, while practicing humility. Practice humility to avoid limitations and being prideful.
When to look for a 3rd Alternative While dealing with a disagreement in a study group, significant disagreements, or when making decisions
Steps to a 3rd Alternative 1. Define the problem 2. Listen to their views 3. Share your views 4. Brainstorm 5. Choose the best idea
3rd Alternatives Are the answer to most conflict situations
Synergy gets you Effective solutions, less work, better relationships, fun and excitement, greater learning and appreciation for the wealth of diversity in the people around you
Synergizing is valuing differences, working interdependently, staying open-minded, finding new and better ways, getting results
