QuestionAnswer
How do machines make work easier? By changing the size, direction, or speed of a force
What is effort force? Force applied to a machine
What is resistance force? Force that opposes the effort force
How do machines help you do work? By multiplying the effort force
What is mechanical advantage or MA? Number of times a machine multiplies the effort force
What is the formula for finding the MA of a machine? MA= resistance force / effort force
What are the 6 simple machines? lever, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, screw, wheel and axle
What do we call the work done by a machine? work output
What formula is used to find the work output of a machine? work output=resistance force X resistance distance
What do we call the work done on a machine? work input
How do we calculate work input? work input=effort force X effort distance
What is efficiency? Comparison of work output to work input
How can we calculate the efficiency of a machine? efficiency=work output/work inputX100
How is the efficiency of a machine usually expressed? as a percentage
What is a fulcrum? the point at which a lever is supported
What are the two parts of a lever? effort arm and resistance arm
How many classes of levers are there? 3
What is a pulley? a rope wrapped around a wheel
What is a fixed pulley? a pulley that does not move
What is always the MA of a fixed pulley? one
How do you find the MA of a movable pulley? By counting the number of ropes that are lifting
What do we call a slanted surface or a ramp? inclined plane
What is two inclined planes put back to back? wedge
What is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder? a screw
What is a compund machine? a machine that combines two or more simple machines
Which has a greater MA? A compund machine or a simple machine compound machine

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
