Wave Vocab
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Amplitude | the measure of wave energy; the maximum height of a wave |
| Wavelength | the distance between two identical points on a wave; crest to crest, trough to trough |
| Frequency | number of waves produced in a given amount of time; rate |
| Hertz (Hz) | unit of measurement for frequency. one Hertz = one wave per second |
| Pitch | the highness or lowness of a sound |
| Medium | a substance that makes possible the transfer of energy from one location to another |
| Crest | the highest point of a wave |
| Trough | the lowest point of a wave |
| Doppler Effect | change in frequency and wavelength of a wave. It is caused by the change in distance between the thing creating the wave and whatever is observer the wave. |
| Reverberation | how sounds bounce how of things |
| Echo | a sound caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener |
| Transmission | the moving of electromagnetic waves through a material |
| Diffraction | when waves spread out after they pass through small openings, or bending of waves around a barrier |
| Refraction | the bending of a wave as it moves from one medium to another |
| Reflection | when a wave strikes an object or surface and bounces off |
| Absorption | the transfer of light energy to matter |
| Scattering | when light waves pass through an imperfect medium |
| Opaque | material that allows no light to pass through |
| Translucent | material the transmit some light, but also scatters some light in different directions |
| Transparent | materail that permits light to pass through without retractions |
