| Simile | Comparison between two unlike things using "like" or "as" |
| alliteration | The repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| Allusion | A reference to an event, place, or character from history, myth, religion, literature or pop culture |
| Hyperbole | A gross exaggeration to show intensity of feeling |
| Imagery | Words or phrases that appeal to any sense or any combination of senses |
| Metaphor | A comparison between two objects with the intent of giving clearer meaning to one of them |
| Onomatopoeia | The use of words which imitate sound |
| Personification | A figure of speech which gives animals, ideas, or inanimate objects human traits or abilities |
| Repetition | The repeating of words, phrases, lines or stanzas |
| Rhyme Scheme | The sequence in which the rhyme occurs |
| Stanza | A grouping of two or more lines of a poem |
