Waves

QuestionAnswer
Wave a disturbance that carries energy through matter or space
Name all five types of waves mechanical, electromagnetic, tranverse, longitudinal, surface
what is a wave pulse? one time; a bang
what is a periodic wave? continous wave; a vibration
Name all parts of the wave and define them crest- highest point; trough- lowest point; ampiltude- how high or low the wave is from the middle; wavelength- the length of the repeating pattern
what is frequency? the number of waves that pass a certain point per unit of time
what is the period of the wave? the time it takes for just one wavelength to pass the point
Define wavespeed? is still the distance divided by the time
what does the wavespeed depend on? the medium it travels through
sound waves mechanical and longitudinal waves
what happens when a sound wave occurs the source vibrates rapidy causing pressure vibrations in the medium
what is the medium? the material a sound wave occurs in
what wave does not require a medium? electromagnetic waves
what wave does require a medium? mechanical waves
what wave has the particles move in circles? surface waves
what vibration is lower then twenty hz infrasounds
what vibrations are higher then 20,000 Hz ultrasound
what do our ears sense when a sound wave occurs? vibrations and them amplifies them; it sends impulses to the brain
loudness depends on.... intensity of the sound wave
Pitch how high or low the sound can be; not how lound
pitch depends on what? frequency
Echo a sound bouncing off an object, can be controlled by surface material
what are echos important for? S.O.N.A.R and sonograms
refraction the bending of light
reflection light rays bouncing off of a surface
line of referance is what? the normal line
what is law of refection? when light strikes an object it refelcts off at the same angle
what does speed depend on? medium and temperature
Name all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum radio waves, infared, ultraviolet, gamma, visible, microwaves
when images are in the mirror they are what reversed
when images are in front of the mirror they are also the same distance behind the mirror
what is the angle of incidence the incoming light, the angle of the light rays striking a surface
what is the angle of relection the angle of light reflecting off the surface; outgoing light

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
