| Terms | Definitions |
|---|---|
| Acquired Immunity | Immunity that has been acquired through exposure to an antigen or infectious agent. |
| Antibodies | Proteins contained within plasma cells that neutralize or destroy antigens; also known as immunoglobulins. |
| Antigen | The marker on cell surfaces that marks the cell as a 'self-cell'; it stimulates the production of antibodies. |
| Attenuated | An altered or weakened live vaccine made from the disease organism against which the vaccine protects. |
| Globulin | Protein that is insoluble in water; immune golbulins protect against disease. |
| Immunity | A type of resistance to infection resulting from an immune response from the body or from agents such as vaccinations. |
| Immunosuppresive agent | The immunosuppressive drugs used frequently to prevent rejection. Also used to treat certain autoimmune diseases. |
| Lymph node | Composed of many small oval structures that filter the lymph and fight infection. Also where lymphocytes, monocytes, and plasma cells are formed. |
| Passive immunity | Resistance that has been acquired through a transfer of antibodies from another person or animal or from mother to child. |
| Toxoid | A toxin that has been rendered harmless but still invokes an antigenic response. |
| Vaccine | Toxoids or attenuated viral components that are given to create a results in immunity. |
