It's steep terrain makes the development of communication links both difficult and expensive

The construction of the Autostrada del Sole linked Naples to Milan, opening a link to richer markets in the North.
Modern Bridges were also built across valleys and tunnels through mountains, allowing for more direct transport routes
Deep-water ports were developed in Naples and Taranto to allow for the development of steel manufacturing and oil and gas refining
Taranto is not the busiest port in the Mediterranean and as a result the region plays a major role in container traffic in the Med
Toursim Vital to economy, 6 million international tourists and 11 million domestic tourists
Climate Mediterranean climate; hot dry summers (25C), ideal for sun and beach holidays
Winter temperatures dont drop below 11C perfect conditions for walking and cycling tours. Upland areas, growing skiing sector eg. mount etna
Landscape Many areas of unspoilt beauty, 800km of coastline that has been shaped by the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas.
Bay of Naples and Amalfi Coast, beautiful scenery and long stretches of beaches
East coast beaches eg Pescara attract tourists. Volcanic mountains attract walkers, sightseers . Mount Vesuvius attracts 2.5 million tourists
History and Culture Ruins of Pompeii attract tourists. Greek Temples in Sicily also attract tourists .
Tourists also visit the region to eat famous Italian Cuisine eg pizza pasta and fish.
Mafia have become a popular tourist attraction in Sicily. In places such as Palermo tourists can stay overnight in a former Mafia estate
