Styles of Yoga
Term | Definition |

Ananda | Based on the teachings of Yogananda; a gentle asana practice |
Bikram | A set sequence of 26 poses practiced in a heated room |
Integral | Values asana, meditation, mantra, service, and devotion equally |
Krishnamacharya | Style grounded on the idea of finding the balance between steadiness and ease; "father of modern yoga" |
Sivananda | Begins with savasana, then sun salutations, twelve asanas, and closes with savasana |
Ashtanga | Involves following a set of six established pose sequences |
Children's | Includes storytelling, games, and different names for asanas |
Iyengar | Incorporates the use of many props to achieve perfect alignment in a pose |
Kundalini | Practiced to awaken the spiritual energy resting in a coil at the base of the spine |
SUP | Yoga asana and pranayama practiced on a narrow and floating board |
Anusara | Developed by John Friend in 1997, translates to "flowing with grace" |
Dharma | Based on classic hatha-raja yoga, includes elements of different styles |
Jivamukti | Scripture, devotion, kindness, music, and meditation |
Prenatal | Asana and pranayama sequences designed specifically for pregnant women |
Vinyasa | Styled is driven by ujjayi pranayama guided movement |
Arial | Combines yoga, Pilates, and dance with the use of a hammock suspended from above |
Hatha | Encompasses any of the physical practices of yoga |
Kripalu | Short holds. Long holds. Meditation. |
Power | Focuses on building strength in the vigorous style that appeals to appeals to athletes and fitness minded folk |
Yin | Restorative style that involved that use of props and holding poses for minutes at a time |
