Figurative Language
GFA's Figurative Language Practice and Review
| Term | Definition |

| Figurative Language | A word or phrase that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning. |
| Metaphor | Metaphors compare two things that are not really alike. |
| Simile | Simile is used when words such as "like" or "as" are used to compare two nouns. |
| Idiom | A well known phrase that means something different than what the words seems to say. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words in a line of poetry, or in a sentence. |
| Onomatopoeia | When a word sounds like the sound it is describing. |
| Hyperbole | An exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally. |
| Personification | Using descriptive human qualities to describe something that is not a person. |
