chemical reactions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| matter | anything that has mass and occupies space |
| chemistry | the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes |
| physical property | a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance |
| chemical property | a property or characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction |
| physical change | melting, transition to a gas, change of strength, change of durability, changes to crystal form, textural change, shape, size, color, volume and density |
| chemical reaction | a process that leads to the chemical transformation of one set of chemical substances to another |
| precipitate | the creation of a solid from a solution |
| endothermic reaction | a reaction that forms energy in the form of heat |
| exothermic reaction | a reaction that releases energy in the form of heat |
| chemical equation | a short easy way to show a chemical reaction using symbols |
| reactants | any substance that undergoes a chemical change in a given reaction. |
| products | a substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction |
| conservation of mass | the principle stating that matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction |
| open system | a system in which matter can enter from or escape to the surroundings |
| closed system | a system in which no matter is to enter or leave |
| coefficient | he numbers in front of the formulas. |
| synthesis | two or more chemical species combine to form a more complex product. |
| decomposition | The separation of a substance into simpler substances or basic elements |
| replacement | where an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound |
| activation energy | the reversible transition of a molecule into a nearly identical chemical or physical state |
| concentration | the amount of a substance per defined space |
| catalyst | a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction, but is not consumed by the reaction |
| enzymes | Proteins that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction in a living organism |
| inhibitor | a substance that decreases the rate of, or prevents, a chemical reaction |
| combustion | a chemical change that produces heat and light |
| fuel | any compound that has stored energy |
