Parts of an Essay

Terms for each part of an essay

TermDefinition
Hook Sentences that catch the reader's attention and hint at the big idea of the essay
Gist Provides background information about the texts discussed in the essay
Thesis The main idea of the entire essay
Transition A word or words that helps the essay flow smoothly and gives a hint about the purpose of the paragraph
Topic Sentence A sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph
Evidence and explanation Details, support, proof, and citations that back up the writer's ideas
Restatement of thesis Reviews the main idea of the essay for the reader
Review of major points and reasons Restates the important supporting points of the essay
Concluding thought A sentence that wraps up a body paragraph by restating its main idea
Final thought a sentence or two sentences that leaves your reader with some interesting and profound thought
Introduction A short opening paragraph
Body Paragraph A long paragraph that presents, supports, and explains ideas that are related to the thesis
Conclusion A short paragraph that summarizes the main points of the essay
