| Drug | A chemical substance, when taken into the body, alters the structure or functioning of the living organism- no perfect definition. Excludes substances for nutritional purposes |
| Pharmakon | Means both medicine and poison |
| Illicit Drug | A drug whose manufacture, saleL, or possession is illegal |
| Licit Drug | A drug whose manufacture, sale, or possession is legal |
| Psychoactive Drugs | Drugs that effect a person's feelings, thoughts, perceptions and/or behaviours |
| Instrumental Drug Use | Use of a drug for a specific reason other than getting high |
| Recreational Drug Use | Use of a drug to get high |
| 4 categories of drug use | Illicit instrumental, illicit recreational, licit instrumental, licit recreational |
| Drug Abuse | Use of a substance in a manner, amount or situation that the drug use results in some form of impairment- social, legal, occupational, psychological, and psychical problems |
| Drug Dependence | Drug use that is so frequent that it appears that the person would have difficulty functioning without the drug. drug has increasingly important role in users life and withdrawal symptoms would appear upon removal of drug |
| Drug Misuse | Use of medications prescribed in amounts greater than or for the purpose other than what they were intended |
| Deviant Drug Use | Use of a substance that is not common within a social group. Social group takes corrective action. Some substance use within the group accepted |
