Pharmacology
the four processes
The four pharmacokinetic processes | A- absorption D- distribution M- metabolism E- excretion |
Absorption in the pharmacokinetic process | Movement of the drug from administration site into the bloodstream. |
Distribution in the pharmacokinetic process | Movement of the drug throughout the body, determined by the blood flow. |
Metabolism in the pharmacokinetic process | The transformation of a drug within the body to make it more hydrophilic so it can be excreted by the kidneys |
Excretion in the pharmacokinetic process | The removal of the substance from the body. |
Pharmacodynamics | The branch of pharmacology concerned with the effects of drugs and the mechanism of their action |
Pharmacodynamic principles | Receptors, Ion channels, Enzymes, Immune system |
Agonists | Drugs that bind to receptors and activate them to produce a biological response |
Antagonists | Drugs that occupy receptors but do not activate them |
Activation levels | Agonist is full activation, agonist and antagonist is less activation and antagonist is no activation. |
