Expository Essay

| contrast | to identify differences in two or more items |
| inference | a logical guess or conclusion based on observation, prior experience, or textual evidence |
| prediction | a logical guess or assumption about something that hasn't happened |
| verbal communication | the process of giving or exchanging information through written or spoken word |
| nonverbal communication | the process of giving or exchanging information through movement, gestures, or facial expressions |
| synthesize | to combine elements (parts) from different sources to create, express, or support a new idea |
| topic sentence | states the main ideas of a paragraph |
| commentary | explanation of the way the facts, details, and/or examples in a paragraph support the topic sentence |
| novel | a type of literary genre that tells a fictional story |
| subplot | a secondary plot that occurs along with a main plot |
| literary analysis | the process of examining closely and and commenting on the elements of a literary work |
| introduction | the opening paragraph of an essay which must get the reader's attention and indicate the topic |
| hook | compelling statement or idea designed to get a reader's attention |
| thesis statement | a sentence, in the introduction of an essay, that states the writer's position or opinion on the topic of the essay |
| conclusion | the ending of a paragraph or essay, which brings it to a close and leaves an impression with the reader |
| nonfiction | writing that is based on facts and actual events |
| fiction | writing that consists of imagined events |
| imagery | descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures; created by details that appeal to the five senses |
| supporting details | in writing, evidence (facts/examples) that support the topic sentence |
