| paroxysm | a sudden outburst of emotion |
| exculpate | prove somebody innocent |
| ephemeral | short-lived; lasting for only a short period of time |
| obdurate | stubborn; hard-hearted |
| fastidious | concerned that even the smallest detail should be just right; disgusted by things that are not perfectly clean |
| subsistence | condition of managing to stay alive |
| lassitude | tiredness and lack of enthusiasm or energy |
| ardour | intense emotion (U.K. spelling, we spell it--ardor) |
| caprice | a sudden unexpected action or change of mind; whim; impulse |
| dilatory | intending to waste time or cause delay |
| ignominious | shameful; involving a total loss of dignity and pride; despicable |
| salubrious | good for the health |
| chimera | imaginary monster whose body is a grotesque combination of mismatched parts; something totally unrealistic |
