Psych Research Pt 6
Problems/Effects with Experiments and Solutions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Carry-Over Effects | occurs when effects of one treatment persist when another treatment is introduced |
| Sensitization Effects | when subject becomes aware of manipulation in the study which causes changes in behavior |
| Practice Effects | occur when subjects performance with the experimental task changes either for better or worse as a result of experience w/ the task |
| Demand Characteristics | aspects of a study that indicate to subjects how they are expected to respond |
| Hawthorne Effect | demand characteristic that happens when subjects change their behavior because they know they are being observed |
| Placebo Effect | a demand characteristic that happens when people change their behavior as a result of their expectation that change should occur |
| Rosenthal Effect | a demand characteristic that happens when subjects change their behavior due to unintentional cues from the researcher |
| Novelty Effect | NOT a demand characteristic; happens when the IV affects the DV only because the IV is something new |
| Range Restriction | occurs when there is a floor or ceiling effect on one of the variables in a correlation |
| Regression to the Mean | tendency for extreme values of variable to fall closer to group mean retested |
| Methods of Counterbalancing | method of assigning subjects to treatment orders so that across subjects, practice effects are even (use all possible treatment orders, use a latin square) |
| Single-Blind Experiment | experiment in which the subject does not know which IV level they received (overcomes Placebo) |
| Double-Blind Experiment | experiment in which neither the subject, nor anyone having contact w/ the subject, knows which IV level the subject receives (overcomes Placebo and Rosenthal) |
