Definitions

TermDefinition
Main Effect the independent effect of one IV on the DV in a factorial design
Factorial Design a research design in which there is more than one IV, and every IV level is present at all levels of the other IVs
Interaction occurs when the effects of one IV on the DV change depending on the level of the other IV
Response Acquiescence Effect tendency of subjects to respond "yes" to questions they have thought little about
Confound nuisance variable that varies non-randomly with the IV
Random Factor IV whose levels were chosen randomly from a population of possible values
Fixed Factor IV whose levels were not chosen randomly
Floor Effects occur when the DV is so low that it is unlikely the IV will affect it
Ceiling Effects occur when the DV is so high that it is unlikely the IV will affect it
Nuisance Variables any variable other than the IV that can affect the DV
Type I Error finding an effect of the IV on the DV when no effect exists
Type II Error not finding an effect of the IV on the DV when an effect exists
Dependent Variable variable the researcher measures to determine effects of the IV
Independent Variable variable for which the researcher chooses values
Within Subjects Design a research design in which each subject receives all levels of the IV
Between Subjects Design a research design in which each subject receives one level of the IV
