Quinn Science Vocab

Part A

QuestionAnswer
Life Science is the study of living things
Scienticfic Method is often described as a series of steps that is used to answer a question to solve a problem
Hypothesis is a possible answer to a question
Controlled Experiment a test only one factor at a time
Variable All of the factors fo the control group and the experiment where all groups are the sameexcept for one the one factor that is different
Theory a unifying explanation for a broad range of hypotheses and observations that have been supported by testing
Technology is the use of knowledge tools, and materials to solve problems and accomplish tasks
Compound Light Microscope is made up of three main parts
Electron Microscope tiny particles of matter called electrons are used to produce magnified images
Area is a measure of how much surface an object has
Volume Is the amount of space that something ocupies
Mass is the amount of matter that makes up an object
Temperature is a measure how hot or cold something is
Cell is a membrane-covered structure that contains all of the materials necessary for life
Stimulus a change in an organism enviroment that affects the activity of the organisms
Homeostasis The maintenance of a stable internal enviroment
Asexual Reproduction a single parent produces offspring that are indentical to the parent
Sexual Reproduction almost always requires 2 parents that will share characteristics of both parents
DNA the cells of all living things contain a special molecule
Heredity the transmission of charateristics form one generation to the next
Metabolism is the total of all of the chemical activities that it proforms
Consumer they eat other organisms
Decomposer are organisms that get their food by breaking down the nutrients in dead organisms or animal wastes
Producer organisms that make their own food usuall by using the energy form sunlight to make sugar
Protein are large molecules that are made up of subunits called amino acids
Carbohydrates are a group of compounds made of sugars
Phospholipids are the molecules that form much of the cell membrane
Lipids are compounds that can not mix with water
Nucleic Acids are compounds made up of subunits called nucleotides
ATP is the major fuel used for all cell activities that require energy
Tissue a group of cells that work together to perform a specific job in the body
Organ the group of tissues that perform a specific job
Organ System organs work together in groups to perform particular jobs those groups are the organ system
Organisms Anything that can live on its own
Multicellular it means you can only exist as a group of cells
Populated a group of organism that are of the same kind and that can live in the same area
Community Two or more populations living in the same area
Cell Membrane a barrier between the inside of the cell and the cells enviroment
Organelles all cells have chemicals and structures that enables the cell to live, grow, and produce that structure is called a organelle
Cytoplasm the fluid and almost everything in it are collectively
Nucleus a membrane covered organelle that holds the cells DNA
Prokaryotic Cells that do not have a nucleus
Eukaryotic cells that have a nucleus
Bacteria Prokayotic cells are also called bacteria
Cell Wall Provides strength and support to the cell membrane
Ribosomes are the smallest but most abundant organelles
Endoplasmic Reticulum is a membrane-covered compartment that makes lipids and ther materials for use inside and outside the cell
Mitochondria ATP can be made at several locations in eukaryotic cells, but most of it is produces at bean-shaped organelles
Chloroplast Plants and alegea have an addition for all kinds of energy-converting
Golgi Complex When proteins and other materials need to be processed and shipped out of a eukaryotic cell, the job goes to and organelle
Vesicles all eukaryotic cells have membrane covered compartment
Vacuole most plant cells have a very large membrane-covered chamber
Lysosomes are special vesicles in animal cells that contain enzymes
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area where their concentration is low
Osmosis the diffusion of water theough the cell membrane is so important to life processes that it has been given a special name
Passive Transport is the diffusion of particles through the protein
Active Transport is the movement of particles through proteins against the normal direction of diffusion

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
