Heredity
PQ 3
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Heredity | parents pass genetic information to their offspring |
| Chromosome | contains thousands of genes (big) |
| Gene | carries ONE single unit of information (medium) |
| DNA | molecule that makes up genes (small) |
| Asexual | ONE parent, offspring have same EXACT genes as its ONE parent |
| Sexual | TWO parents; offspring has half genes from one parent, half from the other parent, and is not identical to either parent. (mix of the two) |
| Genetics | Study of how genes are passed from one generation to the next |
| Punnet Square | 4 squares that show the probability of a trait (eye color, hair color, height) being passed down to an offspring. |
| Dominant trait | overpowers/hides another trait; a single copy of the gene (from one parent) is needed and the trait will show up in the offspringq |
| Recessive trait | can be hidden by a dominant trait, you need 2 copies of the gene for the trait to be expressed |
| CAPITAL LETTERS | Dominant trait ie: B = brown eyes |
| lowercase letters | recessive trait ie: b = blue eye |
