States of Matter

| Term | Definition |

| plasma | a form of matter that has no volume or shape but has electric charges |
| solid | a form of matter that has a specific volume and shape |
| liquid | a form of matter that has a specific volume, can be poured and takes the shape of its container |
| gas | an invisible form of matter with no specific volume or shape; spreads to fill up the container it is in. |
| mass | the amount of matter, or ¨stuff¨ in an object |
| matter | has mass (or weight) and takes up space |
| mixture | two or more pieces of matter that can be mixed together and easily separated (chex mix) |
| solution | two or more pieces of matter that can be combined but NOT easily separated (chocolate milk) |
| volume | the amount of space an object takes up |
| physical property | something that can be observed, measured, or described when looking at a piece of matter |
| balance scale | tool that is used to measure the mass of an object |
| graduated cylinder | tool used to measure the volume of a liquid |
| boiling | the process that changes water from liquid to gas |
| grams | unit used to measure mass |
| milliliters | unit used to measure liquid volume |
