Electricity and Magnetism
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| magnetic force | a push or pull exerted by the pole of a magnet |
| magnetic field | area surrounding a magnet in which the magnetic force exists |
| electromagnetism | production of a magnetic field by electric current |
| electromagnet | a magnet that is made by passing an electric current through a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core |
| electric motor | a device that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy |
| generator | a device that transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy |
| electric current | the continuous flow of electric charges |
| potential difference | the difference in potential energy between two locations |
| voltage | a measure of potential difference |
| insulator | a material that does not conduct heat or electrical energy well; often used to prevent energy from leaving a particular area |
| circuit | a closed path through which electricity can flow |
| load | a device in a circuit that does work using electricity |
| conductor | a material that allows heat or electrical energy to flow through it easily |
| resistor | an object added to a circuit that restricts the flow of electrical energy; inhibits the flow of electric current by producing a voltage drop when current passes through it |
| switch | a device used to control the flow of current through a circuit |
| series circuit | a circuit that provides only one possible path for the flow of electric current |
| parallel circuit | a circuit that offers more than one path for the flow of electric current |
