TermDefinition
PERCEPTUAL CONSTANCIES (PC) Refers to the tendency to perceive an object as remaining stable and unchanging (constant) despite any changes that may occur to the image cast on the retina.
PC - BRIGHTNESS CONSTANCY The tendency to perceive an object as maintaining its level of brightness in relation to its surrounding, despite changes in the amount of light being reflected from the object to the retina.
PC - SIZE CONSTANCY Involves recognizing that an objects actual size remains the same, even though the size of the image it casts on each retina changes.
PC - SHAPE CONSTANCY The tendency to perceive an object as maintaining its shape despite any change in the shape of the image of the object on the retina.
PERCEPTUAL SET (PS) CONTEXT The predisposition, or 'readiness', to perceive something in accordance with what we expect it to be. It is often referred to as EXPECTANCY because various psychological & social factors create an 'expectation' to perceive something in a particular way.
PS - PAST EXPERIENCE Our personal experiences throughout our lives (everything we have learnt both intentionally and unintentionally). Our unique combination of past experience can lead to many individual differences in perception.
PS - MOTIVATION Internal processes which activate behaviour that we direct towards achieving a particular goal. They can be influenced by psychological factors like interests ambitions or desires or biological factors like hunger or thirst.
PS - EMOTIONAL STATE How we are feeling - can also influence the way in which we perceive visual information. Different emotions can 'set' us to perceive information in a particular way which is consistent with the emotion being experienced.
PS - CULTURE The way of life of a particular community or group that sets it apart from other communities or groups. Experience with or in a particular culture, can influence the way we process & interpret visual information.
