convention a way of acting or doing something that most people agree to use
plot what happens in a story, movie or play
retell to tell a story again or to tell what happened in a story
genre a category of a kind of writing (e.g. poetry, fiction, adventure, science fiction, etc.)
word choice using the best words so that the person reading will understand exactly what the writer is saying
analyze to study something carefully
expository writing that explains or informs about something
rubric the list of goals that need to be reached to get each score or grade
index an alphabetic list of words and names listed with the pages where to find them in a book
alphabetize to put things in a,b,c order
consonant all of the letters of the alphabet that are not vowels
decode using letter sounds to find what a word is
name a word used to describe a specific person, animal or thing
preview a description of what is going to happen or look like
pronoun a word that takes the place of a noun for example: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us them
verb a word that shows action or being (is, are, were, etc.)
listening skill being able to understand the meaning of what is being said by hearing and thinking about it.
audience a group of people that are watching or listening to something
glossary an alphabetical list of words and definitions that are found in the back of some books
abbreviation a shortened form of a word or name
conclude to stop or finish
text features all the different parts in a piece of writing such as: title, caption, glossary, charts, diagrams, tables, table of contents, etc.
title the name of a book, article, or other artistic work
conversation talking to each other about something
date the month, year, and number of the day in that month
story structure a kind of map of what happens in a story
question mark a symbol used to show that a question is being asked
antonym a word that means the opposite of another word
uppercase another name for capital letters
visualize to make a picture of something in your mind by using what is written or told
edit to make changes and correct mistakes
indent a space left before starting to write, usually at the beginning of a paragraph
detail / supporting detail a small part of a story, passage or other text
predict to guess what will or might happen in the future.
real something that is not fake or pretend - something that is true and exists -
information facts about a subject, person, or thing
rhyme words that end with the same sound
character a person or animal or subject in a story
lowercase another name for small letters
root word a word or main part of a word that does not have any prefixes or suffixes
table of contents a list at the beginning of a book that shows where to find the different parts
topic the thing or person that is being written about or talked about
capital another name for uppercase (see picture)
noun / proper noun / common noun "person, place or thing /a particular noun usually starting with a capital letter (like a name) / not a particular noun usually not starting with a capital letter
plural more than one of something
space an area that does not have anything in it
encyclopedia a set of books that gives information about many different subjects
fantasy a story, or movie that takes place in an imaginary world
author's purpose why a person wrote something. (Persuade -convince)(Inform - provide information) (Entertain - for fun)
subject / predicate subject - who a sentence is about / predicate – what happens in the sentence
infer / inference a good guess about something using clues from a text
grammar the rules used to put together words, sentences, paragraphs in a language
describe/ description to explain what something or someone looks, sound, smells, feels, and/or tastes like etc.
expression showing a mood
sentence a group of words that expresses a statement, question, command, or wish (Starts with capital letter & ends with . or ! or ?)
prefix a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning
reread to read something again
heading a title at the top of a piece of writing
period a dot used to mark the end of a sentence that is a statement
poem like songs without music
compare & contrast compare – how things are the same / contrast – how things are different
skim to quickly look over a piece of writing to find out what it is about - to read parts of something
action verb a word that tells what a subject is doing
language a system of words and signs that are used to communicate thoughts and feelings
different not the same
short vowel the sound made by: a in cat, e in hen, i in fish , o in fox, u in duck
comma a mark that is used to separate words or groups of words in a sentence.
mystery a story, play or movie that describes how a crime is solved
singular a word used when there is only one thing
vocabulary the meaning of words
blend a sound that two or more letters make when they are put together
thesaurus a book that works like a dictionary, but gives words that mean the same thing as the one you look up
caption the words that go along with a picture in books, magazines, articles, etc.
integration to put two or more things together to make something
narrator the person who tells a story
evaluate to decide the value or worth of something
make believe pretend, or not real
fairy tale a story that has magical creatures and often teaches a lesson
folktale a traditional story or a story that has been told for many generations
opposite completely different
sequence/ sequential the order in which things happen
spelling putting letters in order to make words
cause / effect cause – why a thing happened / effect – the result of the thing that happened
synthesize making something using different things or ideas
introduction the beginning of a piece of writing that usually gives an idea of what will come later in the text
bibliography a list of where an author found information for the writing
long vowel a vowel sound that makes the same sound as the vowel’s name
word a sound or sounds that have a meaning when spoken or written
interrogate to ask questions in order to figure out what is happening
verb tense the way a verb is written to show when something happened e.g. in the past, present, or future
focus main idea or most important part
picture book a book that is all or mostly pictures
fiction / nonfiction fiction - not true or not real / nonfiction – true or real
adverb a word that tells more about a verb or adjective
alphabet the letters used to make all of the words of a language
feedback helpful information given to improve something
illustrate/ illustration a drawing or painting that goes along with the text in a book
discuss to talk about (something) with another person or group
run-on sentence two or more sentences that are not separated correctly
same exactly alike - Not different
contraction a short form of a word group that is usually made by leaving out a letter or sound
passage a short piece of writing
setting a place and time where something happens in a story
brainstorm trying to think of all the ways to answer a question or solve a problem.
story a description of something that happens
conclusion the end part of a piece of writing that tells how everything fits together or makes a summary
syllable a part of a word that has one sound when you say it
sight word the words that are used most often in English
essay a short piece of writing on a particular subject.
wish/want thinking about something that a person would like to have or like to do
stanza a group of lines in a poem, it can be true or imaginary
solution a way to solve a problem or difficult situation
compound word two words put together to make a new word
organize / organization to put things in order, or in way that they can be easily found and used
legend a story from the past that is believed by many people but cannot be proved to be true
apostrophe a symbol that shows a letter is missing (can’t) or that something belongs to somebody (Joe’s)
punctuation the marks used in writing to make the meaning clear and to separate sentences
quotation the marks used to show exactly what somebody said “ ”
diagram a drawing that shows how something works or the parts of something
beginning/ middle/ end the parts of a story
possessive when a word shows that something belongs to somebody. Usually made by adding ‘s
vowel the letters a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y
persuade to convince somebody to agree
follow directions taking the steps that are written or spoken to finish something
synonym a word that means the same or almost the same as another word
atlas a book of maps
title page the page (usually on the front) of a book that tells the name of the book, the author, and other important information
point of view how a person sees (or hears) something and what he thinks about it
summarize to give information again using less words
problem something that is not right or needs to be fixed in a story or movie
main idea what a piece of writing is mostly about
sound Something that can be heard
author the person who wrote the words in a piece of writing (like a book)
letters a symbol that is used to represent a sound – They are used to make words to communicate in reading and writing
fact / opinion fact - something that can be proven / opinion - something that a person believes, or feels, but can not be proven
book cover the outside of a book
imagery using words that can make a picture or feeling in our minds
definition what a word means
suffix a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning
revise to fix mistakes and make changes in writing so that it will be better
