Figurative Language

simile compares two things using like or as
Ex: My mom's chocolate chips cookies turned out as hard as a rock
metaphor compares two different things without using like or as; but it use linking verbs: am, is , are, was and were
Ex: The gorilla's
Alliteration the repetition of beginning sound in words close together.
Ex: Dan diligently did his homework at his desk.
Onomatopoeia word that mimics the sound of an object or action
Ex: Boom, Pow, Tic, Clap
Hyperbole extreme exaggeration
Ex: It took me a million years to do my homework last night!
Personification giving human qualities or characteristics to objects.
Ex: The sun smiled down on all of the people.
Idiom phrases that don't have a literal meaning.
Ex: After Greg's computer broke he was feeling blue.
