Terms and Defintions Ch. 12

TERMSDEFINITIONS
BLISTER PACK Container usually made of plastic that holds a single-close tablet or capsule.
CALIBRATION The markings on a meausure device.
COMPOUNDING The act of mixing, reconsisting, and packaging a drug.
CREAM A hydrophilic base.
ELIXIR A base solution that is a mixture of alcohol and water.
EMULSIFAICATION To make into an emulsion, or bind together.
FDA Food and Drug Administration.
FLOCCULATION The process by which a solute comes out of a solution in the form of flakes or precipitation;the solute then can be filtered out of the solution.
HYDROPHILIC Water loving; any substance that easily goes into water.
HYDROPHOBIC Water hating; any substance that does not go into or mix in water.
LEVIGATE To make into a smooth paste of into a fine powder depending on the agent used.
MORTAR AND PESTLE A bowl and rounded knob used to grind substances into fine powder.
OINTMENT A hydrophobic product such as petroleum jelly.
PUNCH METHOD Filling of capsules by hand with powdered medication premeasured.
RECONSTITUTION To mix a liquid and a powder to form a suspension or solution.
REPACKAGING The act of reducing the amount of medication taken from a bulk bottle; unit dosing is a for of repackaging.
SOLUTE The ingredients tht is dissolved into a solution.
SOLUTION A water base in which the ingredient dissolve completely.
SOLVENT The greater part of a solution.
SUSPENSION A solution in which does not dissolve into the base and which must be shaken before using.
SYRUP A sugar based liguid.
TINCTURE A based solution of alcohol.
TRITURATE To grind of crush powder such as a tablet into fine particles.
UNIT DOSE A single dose of a drug.
