Other skin sensations Pressure, warmth, cold & pain
Gate-control theory The spinal cord contains a neurological "gate" that clocks pain signals/allows them to pass on to the brain
Noiciceptors Sensory receptors that detect hurtful temperatures, pressure, or chemicals
Phantom Limb Sensations Misinterprets the spontaneous central nervous system activity that occurs in the absence of normal sensory input
Tinnitus The sound of silence, phantoms sounds, ringing in the ear
Anosmia Unable to smell
Olfactory Receptor Cells Respond to smell
Kinesthesia The system of sensing the position & movement of individual body parts
Vestibular Sense The sense of body movement & position, including the sense of balance
Sensory Interaction The principle that one sense may influence another, as when the smell of food influences taste
McGurk Effect We may perceive a 3rd syllable that blends with mouth movement & hearing
Embodied Cognition Psychological science, the influence of bodily sensations, gestures, & other states on cognitive preferences & judgments
