Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters and their actions
Neurotransmitters | Action |
---|---|
Acetylcholine (ACh) | Used in the parasymphatetic nervous system. Acts on receptors in smooth muscle to control pressure and digestion, in cardiac muscle to control heart rate, and in exocrine glands. |
Dopamine (DA) | Used primarily in the CNS to control mood and coordinated movement. |
Epinephrine | Used in the sympathetic nervous system. Acts on receptors to regulate cardiac function and bronchodilation. Also called adrenaline. |
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) | Used in the brain to regulate signal delivery. |
Norepinephrine | Used in the CNS and the sympathetic nervous system. In the brain, involved in mood and emotions. In the periphery, acts on receptors to control blood pressure, cardiac function, and digestion. |
Serotonin (5-HT) | Used in the peripheral nervous system and the CNS. In the periphery, acts on receptors in smooth muscle (blood vessels and lining of the gastrointestinal tract.) In the brain, involved in mood and emotions. |
