Forces

Basic force terms

TermDefinition
Force A push or pull
Net Forces The forces remaining after adding and subtracting all forces present
Balanced Forces Equal and opposite forces that cancel each other
Unbalanced Forces Forces that are either not equal or not opposite
Resultant Another name for net force
Counter force A force that opposes motion
Newton The standard unit for measuring force
Inertia Resistance to changes in motion
Terminal velocity The highest velocity a falling object will reach
Free Fall When the only acting force on a falling object is gravity
Gravity An attractive force present between any two objects
