| ADDISON'S DISEASE | Condition resulting in a decrease in adrenocotical hormones, such as mineralocorticoids and gluccorticoids, that causes symptoms including muscle weakness and weight loss. |
| AUTOCRINE | Denoting a mode of hormone action in which a hormone binds to receptors on and the function of the cell type that produced it. |
| AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE | Condition in which a person's tissues are attacked by his or her immune system; abnormal antigen-antibody reaction. |
| CRETINISM | Condition in which the development of the brain and body is inhibited by congenital lack of thyroid secretion. |
| CUSHING'S DISEASE | Syndrome causing an increase in secretion of the adrenal cortex that includes symptoms such as a moon face and deposits of fat (buffalo hump). |
| EXOPHTHALMUS | Prominence of the eyeball caused by increased thyroid hormone. |
| GLUCOSE | Simple sugar. |
| GOITER | Condition in which the thyroid gland is enlarged because of a lack of iodine, known as simple goiter, or because of a tumor, known as toxic goiter. |
| GRAVES' DISEASE | Condition caused by hypersecretion of thyroid with diffuse goiter, exophalmus, and skin changes. |
| HOMEOSTASIS | The equilibrium pertaining to the balance of the body with respect to fluid levels, pH level, and chemicals. |
| HORMONES | Chemical sustances produced and secreted by an endocrine duct into the bloodstream or duct that result ina physiological response at a specific target tissue. |
| HYPERCALCEMIA | Usually high concentration of calcium in the blood. |
| HYPOCALCEMIA | Low concentration of the calcium in the blood. |
| HYPERGLYCEMIA | Abnormally high glucose content circulating in the bloodstream. |
| HYPOGLYCEMIA | Abnormally low glucose content circulating in the bloodstream. |
| MYXEDEMA | Condition associated with a decrease in overall thyroid function in adults; also known as hyperthyroidism. |
| NEUROBLASTOMAS | Tumors of the neural crest; neruoblastomas often consist of cells morphologically. |
| NIDDM | Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. |
| OSTEOPOROSIS | Condition associted with the decrease of bone mass and softening of bones, resulting in the increased possiblility of bone fractures. |
| PAGET'S DISEASE | Condition that affects older adults in which the density of the bones decrease, resulting in the softening and weakening. |
| PARACRINE | Denoting a type of hormone funtions in which hormone synthesized in and release from endocrine cells bind to its receptor. |
| PHEONCHROMOCYTOMAS | Tumors of the adrenal gland that produce excess adrenaline. |
| PTH | Parathyroid hormone. |
| SIMMOND'S DISEASE | A pituitary disorder that is a form of hypopituitarism in which all pituitary secretions are deficient. |
| SPERMATOGENOSIS | The prrocess of producing sperm with half the number of chromosomes. |
| THROXINE | Known as T4; contains four ions of iodine. |
| TRIIODOTHYRONINE | Known as T3; contains three ions of iodine. |
