Behavior (3 ex) | Everything we do that can be directly observed 2 people kissing A baby crying College student riding a motorcycle to campus |
Mental processes | Thoughts, feelings, and motives that people experience privately but that cannot be directly observed |
Surveys | (Questionnaire) Standard set of questions to obtain people's self-reported attitudes/beliefs about a particular topic |

Case Studies | In-depth look at a single individual (Piece together identity development) |
Correlational Coefficient | Degree of relationship between two variables expressed as a numerical value (r) Tells strength and direction using (+ and -) Does not always equal causation |
Dependent Variable | Outcome- factor that can be changed in an experiment in response to changes in the independent variable |

Efferent Nerves | Motor nerves; nerves that carry information out of the brainandspinal cord to other areas of the body |
Central Nervous System (CNS) | Brain/Spinal cord, 99% of nerves are located |
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) | Network of nerves that connects the brain and spinal cord to other parts of the body Bring info to and from the brain/spinal cord and to carry out commands to the CNS |
Somatic Nervous System | Body system consisting of sensory nerves Convey information from the skin/muscles to the CNS like pain and temperature Motor nuerons tell muscles what to do |
Autonomic Nervous System | That takes messages to/from the body's internal organs, monitoring processes such as breathing, heart rate, digestion |
All or nothing principle | Principle that once the electrical impulse reaches a certain level of intensity (threshold), it fires and moves all the way down the axon without losing any intensity |
Endorphins and Examples | Natural opiates that mainly stimulate the firing of nuerons (Shield the body from pain and elevate feeling of pleasure) Long distance runner, woman giving birth, person in shock after a car wreck |
Oxytocin | Hormone/neurotransmitters that plays an important role in the experience of love and social bonding Released when a mother just gives birth |
