Term | Definition |
---|---|
MATTER | Anything that has mass and takes up space |
PROTON | Small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom |
NEUTRON | Small, uncharged particle in the nucleus of an atom |
ELECTRON | A tiny, negatively charged, high-energy particle that moves in the outside of an atom |
CHARGE or NET CHARGE | The total charge of an atom |
ATOMIC MASS (AMU) | The average mass of one atom of an element |
INFER or INFERENCE | An educated guess |
ORBIT | The way the electrons move around the nucleus of an atom |
ELECTRON CLOUD | The area where the electrons move around the nucleus |
SUBATOMIC PARTICLE | A very small particle smaller than an atom: protons, neutrons and electrons |
NUCLEUS | The center of the atom where the protons and neutrons are |
MODEL | A presentation of something in 3-Dimensions (3-D) |
PERIODIC TABLE | A tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, ordered by their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties, whose structure shows periodic trends. |
ATOMIC SYMBOL | The letter(s) that represent an element |
ATOMIC NUMBER | Represents the number of protons in an atom |
ATOMIC ELEMENT | A substance that cannot be broken down |
MOLECULE | A combination of two (2) or more atoms that are bonded together |
COMPOUND | Two (2) or more elements bonded together |
BOND | A lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables the formation of chemical compounds |
SUBSTANCE | A group of objects that create something. A material with a definite chemical composition |
PURE | A single element, or combination of the same element |
MIXTURE | Two (2) or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined |
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE | A mixture where the components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same throughout |
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE | A mixture where the components of the mixture are not uniform or have localized regions with different properties. Different samples from the mixture are not identical to each other |
