Vocabulary for Atoms, Elements & Models

TermDefinition
MATTER Anything that has mass and takes up space
PROTON Small, positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom
NEUTRON Small, uncharged particle in the nucleus of an atom
ELECTRON A tiny, negatively charged, high-energy particle that moves in the outside of an atom
CHARGE or NET CHARGE The total charge of an atom
ATOMIC MASS (AMU) The average mass of one atom of an element
INFER or INFERENCE An educated guess
ORBIT The way the electrons move around the nucleus of an atom
ELECTRON CLOUD The area where the electrons move around the nucleus
SUBATOMIC PARTICLE A very small particle smaller than an atom: protons, neutrons and electrons
NUCLEUS The center of the atom where the protons and neutrons are
MODEL A presentation of something in 3-Dimensions (3-D)
PERIODIC TABLE A tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, ordered by their atomic number, electron configuration, and recurring chemical properties, whose structure shows periodic trends.
ATOMIC SYMBOL The letter(s) that represent an element
ATOMIC NUMBER Represents the number of protons in an atom
ATOMIC ELEMENT A substance that cannot be broken down
MOLECULE A combination of two (2) or more atoms that are bonded together
COMPOUND Two (2) or more elements bonded together
BOND A lasting attraction between atoms, ions or molecules that enables the formation of chemical compounds
SUBSTANCE A group of objects that create something. A material with a definite chemical composition
PURE A single element, or combination of the same element
MIXTURE Two (2) or more substances mixed together but not chemically combined
HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture where the components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout the mixture. The composition of the mixture is the same throughout
HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture where the components of the mixture are not uniform or have localized regions with different properties. Different samples from the mixture are not identical to each other
