| situational irony | when a character/reader expects one thing to happen but something else happens |
| soliloquy | a speech spoken by a character when no one else is on stage that reveals a character's thoughts |
| speaker | the voice that "talks" to the reader in a poem |
| stanza | formal division of lines in a poem, considered as a unit |
| static(flat) character | character that remains the same as the plot unfolds |
| stock character | a recurrent "type" such as the oaf, the clown, the coward, the nagging wife,etc |
| style | the particular way in which a piece of literature is written |
| subjective details | when the writer is concerned with conveying personal experience and feeling from a person point of view |
| subplot | secondary plot or strand of main plot that runs parallel to it and supports it (B or C story) |

| vernacular | domestic or native language |
| vignette | a small impressionistic scene, an illustration, a descriptive passage, a short essay, a fiction, or non fiction work focusing on one particular moment or giving impression about an idea, character, setting mood, aspect or an object |
