Mixtures & Solutions

TermDefinition
Mixture A combination of two or more substances in which no new kinds of matter are formed.
Solution A special mixture formed when one substances dissolves into another.
Concentration The amount of solute compared to the solvent (water); A measurement of the amount of solute that is dissolved in a solvent.
Heterogeneous mixture Mixtures that have uneven/different distribution of their parts and are physically separated; The parts are easily seen and can be easily separated.
Homogeneous mixture Mixtures whose parts are evenly distributed (solution); The separate parts come together and look the same.
Solute The substance in a solution that becomes dissolved and spreads out evenly.
Solvent The substance in a solution that dissolves the solute; Water the universal substance.
Dissolve When a substance breaks apart and spreads out even into a solution.
Rate How quickly or slowly something happens.
Evaporation Method of separating mixtures that uses boiling; Most solutions are separated using this method.
Filters Materials with very tiny holes that block solid or large particles, but allow gas, liquids, or small grains to pass through.
Ways to Increase the Rate of Dissolving Warm temperatures, stirring, and using small sized particles that have larger surface areas speed up the dissolving process.
