The Brain

Brain and Neuropsychology

TermDefinition
Autonomic Nervous system Is a network of unmyelinated nerve fibres connecting the senses and internal organs with the CNS
Central Nervous system Consists of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous system A network of nerve fibres connecting the various parts of the body with the CNS. It is made up of the CNS and ANS
Somatic Nervous System A network of myelinated sensory and motor neurons that carry sensory information to, and instructions for movement from the CNS
What does the SNS Consist of? Sensory & Motor Neurons, Directs Muscles to react & move and receives messages from the senses
What does the ANS do? Helps to transmit & receive information from organs divided into 2
What is the ANS divided into? Sympathetic (Increases activity) Parasympathetic (Decreases activity)
Excitatory Potentials Makes it more likely for the Neuron to fire
Inhibitory Potentials Makes it less likely for the Neuron to fire
Frontal Lobe Location: At the front Responsible: Carrying out higher mental functions e.g Thinking, Decision Making & Planning
Temporal Lobe Stimulated behind temples & Responsible: processing auditory information
Partial Lobe Location: Back of the Brain Responsible: Processing sensory info associated with taste, temp & touch
Occipital Lobe Location: Lower back of the Brain Responsible: Processing visual info from eyes
Cerebellum Location: Lower brain Responsible: Balance & Coordination
Localisation of Function View that particular areas of brain responsible for specific functions e.g vision and language
Motor Area Responsible: Movement Function: Sends messages to muscles via brain stem and spinal cord
Somatosensory Area Function: Sensation of the body next to motor cortex, perceives touch
Visual Area Has 2 cortices 1 in each hemisphere . Primary visual cortex/ Area V1 is for perception
Auditory Area 2 cortices 1 in each hemisphere. They receive info from both ears via 2 pathways that transmit info about what sound is and location
Language Area Take place in Broca's and Wernicke's area, in left hemisphere
First person to map out the Brains sensory & motor cortices was? Penfield
What technique was it known as? Neural Stimulation
How is the Somatosensory presented as? Penfield Homunculus

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
