vocabulary terms

TermDefinition
Physical Traits The way a character looks. (outside)
Character Traits The way a character behaves or acts most of the time. (NOT feelings)
Protagonist The main Character.
Antagonist The character who causes a problem for the main character.
Simile Comparing 2 objects using "like" or "as".
Metaphor Comparing 2 objects using "is" or "was" (one is the other)
Hyperbole Exaggeration
Personification Give non-living objects living characteristics.
Alliteration 2 or more words with the same beginning sounds.
Onomatopoeia Sound Words
Idiom Phrase that doesn't mean what it says.
Allusion A reference to a cultural person or story.
Exposition Include the setting, characters, and problem in the novel.
Inciting Action Event that puts the story in motion.
Rising Action Important events that lead to climax.
Climax Turning Point-when the main character has a change of heart. (a-ha moment)
Falling Action Important events that lead to the resolution.
Resolution Problems are solved and the story ends.
Character vs. Society Conflict occurs when a character goes against the laws of society.
Character vs. Self Central conflicts is (internal)to the main character...he struggles with his self.
Character vs. Technology A chracter has a problem with a robot or machine (often found in Sci-Fi).
Charcter vs. Nature A character is tormented by natural forces such as storms or animals.
Cause The reason something happens which occurs first or prior to the result.
Effect What happens as a result of or after an event.
