| Internal Conflict | Character vs. Self |
| The five different external conflicts are: | 1. Character vs. Character 2. Character vs. Nature 3. Character vs. Society 4. Character vs. Supernatural 5. Character vs. Machine/Technology |
| Plot | A story line |
| Exposition | Introduction to characters, setting |
| Rising Action | Adds incidents of greatest tension |
| Climax | Point of greatest tension |
| Falling Action | Relaxes the conflict to prepare for conclusion (not always present) |
| Resolution | Resolves the conflict, ends plot |
| Characterization | The creation/description of a character |
| Protagonist | The main character in a story |
| Antagonist | Person against the main character |
| Dynamic Character | Changes during the course of the story; they act and are change by their actions. |
| Static Character | Do not change |
| 1st Person | Narrator tells story (uses "I" and "Me") |
| 3rd Person | Narrator tells story from outside; telling only what an observer would see. |
| 3rd Person Partially Omniscient | Narrator is outside of the story; but can see in heart and mind of ONE character. |
| 3rd Person Omniscient | Narrator is outside the story; but can see into the heart and mind of ALL characters. |
| Setting | Where the story takes place |
| Mood | The atmosphere or feeling in the literary text |
| Tone | The author's attitude toward a subject or an audience. |
| Flashback | A character remembers an earlier event that happened before the current point of the story. |
| Foreshadowing | A writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story |
