amplitude the height of a peak above the resting line

transverse wave a wave where the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction of the wave
trough the lowest point of a wave below the resting line
wave a continuous disturbance that transfers energy but not matter
wavelength the distance traveled by one complete wave cycle
medium a substance or material that a wave travels through
rarefaction the parts of a longitudinal wave where the medium is spread apart
compression the parts of a longitudinal wave where the medium is closer together
Resting Line or Equilibrium Line the position the medium would take if there were no wave
hertz the unit of frequency
Hz the abbreviation for the unit of frequency
vacuum a space without any matter
