9th Science CH6 Using Thermal Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| combustion | rapid burning |
| conduction | the transfer of energy through matter in which energy moves from particle to particle; conduction takes place more easily in solids than in liquids and gases |
| convection | the transfer of energy by the bulk movement of matter in which particles move from place to place in a fluid, carrying the energy with them |
| external combustion engine | an engine in which the fuel is burned outside the engine; for example, an old-fashioned locomotive steam train |
| fluid | any material that flows; liquids and gases are fluids |
| heat engine | a device that converts thermal energy that is produced by burning fuel into mechanical energy; for example, an automobile engine |
| heat mover | a device that moves thermal energy from one location and releases it in another location having a different temperature |
| insulator | a material that does not allow heat or electrons to move through it easily |
| internal combustion engine | an engine in which fuel is burned inside the engine in chambers (cylinders); for example,an automobile engine |
| ocean thermal energy conversion | process that uses heat engines to convert differences in ocean temperatures into mechanical energy to drive turbines |
| radiation | the transfer of energy in the form of waves; radiation is a type of energy transfer that does not require matter |
| solar collector | a device that absorbs radiant energy from the sun that can be converted to thermal energy used to heat buildings |
| solar energy | energy from the sun; can be converted into thermal energy to heat homes and other buildings |
