atom | the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element. |
solid | matter with fixed volume and shape. |
liquid | a state of matter with fixed volume but no defined shape. |
gas | a state of matter without any defined volume or shape in which atoms and molecules move about freely. |
melting point | the temperature of which a solid turns to a liquid |
freezing point | the temperature at which a liquid tuns to a solid |
boiling point | the temperature at which a liquid turns to a gas |
physical property | a characteristic that can be observed such as, texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, and density. |
physical change | a change in matter that does not effect its chemical composition. |
chemical property | the ability of a substance to change. |
chemical change | a process that changes substances into new substances. |
law of conservation of matter | a fundamental principle of science stating that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a closed system. |
sublimation | when anything solid turns into a gas without first becoming a liquid, that's sublimation |
