States of Matter
| Term | Definition |

| solid | the state in which matter has a definite shape and volume |
| liquid | state of matter which takes the shape of its container and has a definite volume |
| gas | state in which matter has changes in both shape and volume |
| plasma | the state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume and whose particles have been broken apart |
| vaporization | the change of state from a liquid to a gas |
| boiling | vaporization occurs throughout a liquid |
| evaporation | vaporization that occurs at the surface of a liquid below its boiling point |
| condensation | change of state from a gas to a liquid |
| sublimation | change of state from a solid directly to a gas |
| freezing | change from a liquid to a solid |
| melting | change from a solid to a liquid |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| deposition | change of state from a gas directly to a solid |
| Phase change | Physical change in the state of matter from one state to another |
| endothermic | A type of reaction that absorbs energy from its surroundings |
| exothermic | A type of reaction that releases energy to its surroundings |
