7th Science CH11 The Rock Cycle
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| extrusive | igneous rock formed by lava on Earth’s surface; extrusive igneous rock cools in air and moisture, forming minerals quickly that are much smaller than those in intrusive rock |
| foliated | texture of metamorphic rocks whose mineral grains have been flattened and lined up in parallel bands |
| igneous rock | forms when lava or magma cools and crystals grow together, creating solid igneous rock |
| intrusive | igneous rock formed slowly from magma deep beneath Earth’s crust; generally contains large, visible minerals |
| metamorphic rock | forms when heat or pressure or both are applied to any kind of rock |
| nonfoliated | texture of metamorphic rocks whose mineral grains have been changed, rearranged, or combined (but did not form parallel bands) |
| rock | a mixture of one or more minerals or a mixture of mineraloids, glass, or organic particles |
| rock cycle | process by which the materials of Earth change to form different kinds of rocks; all rocks are in a constant state of change |
| sedimentary rock | formed when any type of rock and plant and animal remains are weathered into sediments and then recombined to form rock by compaction, cementation, or precipitating out of solution |
