Scientific Method

| technology | the practical use of scientific information to improve the quality of human life |
| physical science | the study of matter and energy |
| model | a symbolic representation of an idea, system or structure to make something understandable |
| observation | using your senses to gather information |
| hypothesis | a testable prediction used to see how something works or to solve a problem |
| theory | the most logical explanation of way things work the way they do |
| A theory | former hypothesis that has been tested with repeated experiments and observations and found to always work |
| scientific law | a rule that describes, but doesn’t explain |
| A scientific law | a pattern in nature and predicts what will happen under specific conditions |
| experiment | an organized procedure for testing a hypothesis |
| control | a standard for comparison in an experiment |
| constant | a factor that does not change in an experiment |
| independent variable | a factor that is changed by the experimenter |
| dependent variable | the factor that changes because of the independent variable |
