Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |

| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space, occurring in three physical states of solid, liquid or gas |
| Volume | the amount of space something takes up |
| Solid | substance with a DEFINITE shape (cannot be changed), and a DEFINITE volume (cannot be changed) molecules are tightly packed together |
| Liquid | substance with NO DEFINITE shape (shape can change) and a DEFINITE volume (volume cannot be changed) molecules are loosely packed |
| Gas | substance with NO DEFINITE shape or volume (both shape and volume can change) molecules are spread out |
| Relative Density | determines whether an object will sink or float |
| Conductor | ALLOWS heat or electricity to pass through |
| Insulator | STOPS heat or electricity from passing through |
| Thermal Conductor | ALLOWS heat to pass through |
| Thermal Insulator | STOPS heat from passing through |
| Electrical Conductor | ALLOWS heat to pass through |
| Electrical Insulator | STOPS electricity from passing through |
| Magnetism | the ability of an object to be attracted to a magnet |
