Properties of Matter

TermDefinition
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space, occurring in three physical states of solid, liquid or gas
Volume the amount of space something takes up
Solid substance with a DEFINITE shape (cannot be changed), and a DEFINITE volume (cannot be changed) molecules are tightly packed together
Liquid substance with NO DEFINITE shape (shape can change) and a DEFINITE volume (volume cannot be changed) molecules are loosely packed
Gas substance with NO DEFINITE shape or volume (both shape and volume can change) molecules are spread out
Relative Density determines whether an object will sink or float
Conductor ALLOWS heat or electricity to pass through
Insulator STOPS heat or electricity from passing through
Thermal Conductor ALLOWS heat to pass through
Thermal Insulator STOPS heat from passing through
Electrical Conductor ALLOWS heat to pass through
Electrical Insulator STOPS electricity from passing through
Magnetism the ability of an object to be attracted to a magnet
