Allegory- Genres
| Term | Definition |

| Analogy | comparison between two things alike in some way |
| Alliteration | the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of a word |
| Round Characters | a character with much personality (think full of personality) |
| Static Characters | a character who does not change throughout the story (think static on TV; it never changes) |
| Dynamic Characters | a character who changes throughout the course of a novel |
| Characters | the people, animals, or imaginary creatures, who take part in action of a work of literature. |
| Author's Purpose | a writer usually writes for one or more of these purposes: to express thoughts and feelings; to persuade; to entertain. |
| Assonance | the repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words |
| Antagonist | the character working against the main character; "the bad guy" |
| Non-fiction | prose writing that is BASED ON FACTS, real events, and real people, such as a biography or history. (NOT FAKE) |
| Fantasy | a genre of fiction that contains magical elements such as nonexistent worlds, talking animals, and other creatures, and objects or people with super powers. |
| Dystopian Fiction | set in a post-apocalypse society or future society in which the laws and morals that govern the people have regressed to the point of repression |
| Science Fiction | a genre of fiction that is set in the future and based on the impact of real, potential, or imagined technology. |
| Historical Fiction | a genre of fiction that is set in the past and involves real people, places, or significant events from history. |
| Adventure | consists of incredible journeys or the struggle to survive |
| Mystery | involves the search for answers surrounding an unexplained event |
| Realistic Fiction | a genre of fiction that is set in the modern present with human characteristics and is based on the premise that the story's plot could happen in real life. |
| Fiction | literature in the form of prose, especially short stories and novels, that describes imaginary events and people (fake) |
| Genre | a category in which a work of literature if classified |
| Foreshadowing | a writer provides hints that suggests future events in a story. |
| Flashback | an interruption in action to present events that took place at an earlier time |
| Figurative Language | saying something other than what is literally meant - this is done for a specific effect; LANGUAGE THAT COMMUNICATIONS MEANING BEYOND THE LITERAL |
| Dialogue | written conversation between two or more characters. |

| Connotation | the ideas and feelings associated with the word |
| Conflict | a struggle between opposing forces |
| Characterization | the way a writer creates and develops characters |
| Flat Character | a character with little or no personality |
| Allusion | a reference to a famous person, place, event or work of literature |
| Allegory | a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one |
