Classifying Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| State of Matter | Property that describes whether the material is a solid, liquid, or gas. |
| Volume | Tells how much space an object takes up. |
| Spacing of Particles | Tells if the particles of a type of matter are packed, loose, or spread apart. |
| Shape | Describes if an object has a definite, or unchanging, form. |
| Movement of Particles | Describes if the particles of an object are just vibrating, flowing, or moving apart. |
| Physical Property | Properties that can be observed and measured, and DO NOT cause a change in the chemical properties of an object. (Examples: size, color, and shape) |
| Solid | State of Matter that has it a definite shape and volume; Its molecules move the slowest and are packed the closest. Its molecules have the least energy and are the least compressible. |
| Liquid | State of Matter that does NOT have a definite shape and takes the shape of its container, but it DOES HAVE a definite volume. Its molecules have more energy and move faster than solids. |
| Gas | State of Matter that has NO definite shape or volume; it expands to fill its container. Its molecules have more energy and move faster than liquids; Molecules are easily compressible |
