Personal Narrative Vocabulary List

narrative a type of writing that tells a story or describes a sequence of events in an incident
personal narrative a piece of writing that describes an incident and includes reflection on the incident
the writing process the steps used to generate a finished piece of writing
prewriting the first step in the writing process where you brainstorm and organize your ideas
drafting the second step in the writing process where you create a rough copy of your writing
revising the third step in the writing process where you improve your writing by adding, removing, rearranging, or replacing words/sentences
editing the fourth step in the writing process where you proofread your work by looking at grammar, spelling, and punctuation
publish the last step in the writing process where you create a clean final copy and then typed
plot the sequence of related events that make up a story or novel (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution)
exposition events at the beginning of a story that give the reader background information needed to understand a story and the conflict is introduced; also called the beginning or introduction
rising action major events that develop the plot of a story and lead to the climax
climax the turning point or the high point of a story; the main conflict is resolved
falling action events after the climax of a story but before the resolution
resolution the outcome of the conflict of a story, when loose ends are wrapped up; also called conclusion or denoument
conflict a struggle between two opposing forces
narrator one who tells a story
point of view the perspective from which story is told
1st person point of view the narrator is a character in the story telling what he or she sees or knows
setting the time and place in which a narrative occurs; can also include a description of the weather
characterization the methods a writer used to develop characters; for example, through descriptions, actions, and dialogue
dialogue conversation between characters
transitions words or phrases that connect ideas, details, or events in writing
reflection a kind of thinking and writing which seriously explores the significance of an experience, idea, or observation
sequence of events the order in which events happen; the beginning, middle, and end
incident a distinct piece of action, such as an episode in a story or a play
