| typhoon | a dangerous tropical storm with heavy rains and high winds, known as a hurricane in the Western Hemisphere |
| demilitarized zone (DMZ) | a neutral area between enemy countries, specifically between North Korea and South Korea |
| steppe | a very large plain of dry grassland |
| semiarid | somewhat dry, with very little rainfall |
| ger | a portable tent made of felt |

| carapace | the hard shell of an animal such as a turtle |
