TermDefinition
additive inverse The opposite of a number.
absolute value how far a number is from zero
integers The set of numbers containing zero, the natural numbers, and all the negatives of the natural numbers.
natural numbers The whole numbers from 1 upwards: 1, 2, 3, and so on ... No negative numbers and no fractions
negative numbers Real numbers that are less than zero.
positive number Real numbers that are greater than zero.
rational number A real number that can be written as a simple fraction (i.e. as a ratio).
opposite numbers Two numbers that have the same value but are opposite in signs.
zero pair a number and its opposite, which add to 0
long division the operation of division in which the sequence of steps are indicated in detail
repeating decimal A decimal that repeats a digit or group of digits forever.
terminating decimal A decimal number that ends or terminates
multiplicative inverse the reciprocal of a number
